We eat a lot of pickles in my house. How could we not? We live in a town that has a sandwich-slash-pickle shop called Brine Barrel. I stop by for a quart of dill pickles every few weeks and the first thing I do when I get home is eat one … and then I decant the rest. See, they come in those iconic plastic deli containers, which I love for other things but hate for pickle storage. Who wants to fish around a tub full of briny juice to pull out a treat? Not me. Plus, I’d rather have the deli container at the ready for other things: namely storing or freezing leftovers!
Which brings me to this Pickle Storage Container with Strainer Insert. I stumbled upon it one day, while browsing through Amazon (as one does). Well, first I found some hourglass-shaped pickle containers. I was intrigued. They seemed like a good idea. When you’re storing the pickles in the fridge, you let the liquid mingle with the pickles. When it’s time for a snack, you flip the hourglass over and the liquid collects in the bottom chamber, allowing you to snatch up a pickle from the top. Only the reviews were horrendous. Lots of leaked pickle juice all over! So I searched for other pickle storage containers and found this one, which I promptly bought.
The design is so simple. It’s just a square container (which is easier to hold than a round one) with a removable strainer basket. You lift up the basket and pick your pickle. All the liquid strains out and you can take what you touch. No more wet fingers or haphazardly stabbing at stuff with a knife! It comes with a lid, too. The lid does snap on but I wouldn’t recommend turning the container over. (Also, do not pick the container up from the lid!)
Amazon shoppers seem to love this little guy as much as I do; it has more than 3,500 five-star reviews. Lots of reviewers say it reminds them of the container their moms and grandmothers used to have. (While it’s not exactly new, I stand by my statement of it being the best thing since sliced bread. Pun kind of intended because we eat pickles with sandwiches. Get it?!) And many are quick to point out that it’s also great for olives, pineapple chunks, pickled jalapeños, and more. So far, I’ve only used it for pickles, but I definitely see the appeal of using it for other things. Maybe I need to get a second one, as we likely won’t be out of pickles any time soon.
